Wow, look at all that stuff!
If you're a beginner, maybe you're
saying something more like "Wow, that's too much stuff, I can never learn all that!"
Or maybe you're a novice and you're more like "Wow, that does give me a lot of control . . ."
Or if you're all over this stuff, you should be rubbing your chin and nodding and saying "Not bad . . nice package . . ."
Beginners, please chill out! The main reason it looks like so much stuff is that all the tasks are separated out into
individual modules, making each module simple enough. You just click choices and enter info and you'll get it figured out
in short order.
Somewhere around half of the web site utilities you see on your cpanel are things you likely will never touch.
Another chunk will be things you set up once and you're done. A few of them are for advanced users only. Your new
account will have a default index page with instructions, personally prepared by yours truly.
Your cpanel use will very much depend on just what you're doing with your site, but it will not be a burden.
You can even set things up so that you hardly ever visit your cpanel.
Everything works pretty darn good, these packages are now mature and the bugs are few and far between.
The BIG EXCEPTION is the File Manager utility. What can I say, it sucks! It's so clunky that the only explanation
is that they do it on purpose simply because you really should be editing your files locally and uploading them
to your site's server via ftp, like the internet has done since almost forever.
The tricky part is understanding the terminology and the basics of what things do. Once you have a grasp of that
stuff, you'll know how to make your choices. Doing all this Control Panel (cpanel) stuff is what is known as
'configuring your domain' - your hosting package gives you all this stuff 'out of the box', along with the starting
folders and files. We basically do all we can up to the point where the next step is to customize your web presence.
We have lessons on www.htmlu.com (starting Jan 2 2007) covering all this stuff.
